Positive Futures

The Positive Futures Project is a regional project aimed at creating strong support for students and staff living with HIV and AIDS on university campuses.

The project is based at the following Universities: Makerere University (Uganda), University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Namibia, University of Zambia and the University of Zimbabwe. Through working with HIV positive students and staff, the project seeks to find creative ways in which Universities can respond to the challenges posed by the epidemic and creating a non discriminatory environment for staff and students living with HIV and AIDS. A student intern placed in each university facilitates the day to day running of the project. The interns are tasked with offering a range of training and support workshops, developing a team of paralegal volunteers, counsellors and support structures as well as working to create an environment where staff and students living with HIV and AIDS feel safe and supported should they wish to disclose their HIV status. In addition the interns are expected to negotiate flexible programmes with the University which will address the fact that their studies may be interrupted through ill health or family commitments.
