University of Pretoria

EU/HESA Institutional Project

The University of Pretoria (UP) has received, through Higher Education South Africa, a European Union grant to strengthen its institutional response to HIV and AIDS. UP is one of 21 other universities in South Africa that received such a grant.

The grant is managed by a team based at the Centre for the Study of AIDS (CSA), which will run until May 2009. The project will contribute to strengthen the current activities of the CSA as well as boost UP’s capacity to respond to the epidemic.

The project will contribute to enhancing the University of Pretoria’s aptitude to produce graduates who are adequately equipped to overcome the challenges of HIV and AIDS; to prevent new HIV infections among students and staff members; to promote a caring and supportive environment for members of UP who are living with HIV; to spark off intellectual curiosity on HIV and AIDS-related issues, and to ensure academic rigour in knowledge creation on HIV and AIDS.

It is within this framework that a number of activities will be undertaken at the University, including further integration of HIV and AIDS in teaching curriculum; discussion forums on HIV and AIDS and HIV and AIDS awareness campaigns.
