R400-Million for Poverty Alleviation

The Minister of Social Development Dr. Zola Skweyiya and the Minister of Land and Agriculture, Ms. Thoko Didiza will on Friday visit the most poverty stricken areas of the country in Ntabankulu, OR Tambo District, Eastern Cape where they will make major announcements regarding R400-million allocated for poverty relief for the most vulnerable families and communities.


Social Development Minister Dr. Zola Skweyiya will also at 9:00 together with the United Nations, launch the United Nations Population Fund Country Programme in Libode, which is aimed at improving policies and programmes that will help fight poverty, HIV/AIDS and other social ills.

“We have chosen Ntabankulu and the surrounding areas because it is one of the worst areas hit by poverty in the country and we want to make sure that our programme of pushing back the frontiers of poverty does indeed make impact amongst the poorest of the poor especially children. This is the beginning of our social cluster of government campaign to intensify the implementation of food security programmes within poor communities. The fight against hunger especially amongst children is our priority and remains critical to the whole fight against poverty,” the Minister said.

The occasion will also see the distribution of the first batch of Ace Mealie Meal from Tiger Brands to poor families. Tiger Brands has donated 900 000 bags of 2,5 kg of mealier meal in a partnership with the Department of Social Development in the fight against poverty.

Thousands of people including Mayors, Councilors, Members of Parliament and representatives of the business community are expected to be attend these two gatherings

Food parcels as well as agricultural goods will be distributed to poor household s in Ntabankulu as part of the poverty alleviation programme.

The R400-million was allocated by the Minister of Finance, Trevor Manuel recently as part of the government efforts to protect the poorest of the poor from the spiraling food prices and also provide food security.
