The project was based at the following Universities: Makerere University (Uganda), University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Namibia, University of Zambia and the University of Zimbabwe. Through working with HIV positive students and staff, the project sought to find creative ways in which Universities could respond to the challenges posed by the epidemic and creating a non discriminatory environment for staff and students living with HIV and AIDS. A student intern placed in each university facilitated the day to day running of the project. The interns were tasked with offering a range of training and support workshops, developing a team of paralegal volunteers, counsellors and support structures as well as working to create an environment where staff and students living with HIV and AIDS felt safe and supported should they wish to disclose their HIV status. In addition the interns were expected to negotiate flexible programmes with the University which addressed the fact that their studies may be interrupted through ill health or family commitments.
